Is Speedrunning a Form of Drug Use or Something?
Good heavens no! To put it quite simply, speedrunning - in the video game community and most everywhere - is beating a certain game as fast as possible through glitches, optimal routes, etc. There are many different forms of speedrunning too! Currently I am not in the 100% category of speedrunning. It is a massive time commitment due to the number of times you have to beat a game - especially if it is not a game released to be intentionally spedrun.
Speedrunning Basics
For speedruns, you have many choices like: 100%, any%, all bosses, pacifist, etc. And the total number of categories varies from game to
game because of the difference in games.
I am in the progress of becoming the #1 EMU (emulator) speedrunner of Super Mario 64 - category
70 star.
In Super Mario 64, there are 100% (120 stars), 70 stars, 16 stars MIPless (glitch term), 16 stars MIP, and 0 stars as the main speedrunning categories.
My Journey as a Speedrunner
I started speedruning this game in 2018 and started streaming it in 2019. Since then, in my very intermittant practices, I have gone from a time of 01:36:27.61 all the way down to 01:03:16.24. Almost under an hour. The current world record is 00:48:24.00. So I clearly have quite a ways to go!
It is definitely a harder hobby than most, requiring hours set aside just to practice. One can easily practice for 2 hours on a 10 second excecution. You can only imagine the horror at practicing a maneuver for 2 hours a day 3 times a week and then when it comes time for an actual timed run, you completely flub that part and ruin the entire run. And because the game has been out for so long, and runners have perfected the routes so much, you even have to practice walking around in the overworld to get muscle memory so as not to slowly lose time over the length of the run. I have spent far less time in practice and repitition than any of the top and even low level speedrunners, so I cannot say that I expect to be cracking the top 10 anytime soon. However, any and all are welcome to track my progress over on my Twitch channel, so make sure to check it out if speedrunning peaks your interest!
